Approximately 250 to 260 million tons of grain are traded worldwide every year. This is close to 15% of the total world production. Wheat accounts for roughly 110 million tons, and feed grain for the remainder. While the new, large exporting countries (U.S., Canada, Australia, Argentina, EU, Russia, Kazakhstan, Brazil, and Thailand) provide close to 70% of the supply on the world market, more than 100 countries have a demand for grain. Toepfer International′s product range comprises wheat, durum, feed barley, malting barley, corn, sorghum, rye, oats, triticale, rice, and malt.
With increasing purchasing power, the demand for oilseeds and vegetable oils is rapidly growing as well. The annual growth is now between 3% and 5%. International trade with oilseeds has now reached a volume of roughly 85 million tons. Soybeans account for more than 80% of that. The concentration on the buyer side is just as large. The three most important exporting countries (U.S., Brazil, and Argentina) contribute close to 80% of the worldwide export of oilseeds and close to 90% of soybeans. Even if more than 100 countries request oilseeds, a clear concentration can be discerned here as well. China imports more than 35% of all oilseeds traded worldwide and more than 40% of all traded soybeans. The EU imports a further 20% of all oilseeds as well as of all soybeans. Toepfer International is involved in the trade with soybeans, rapeseed, sunflower seeds, and linseed.
The worldwide rising demand for animal products, such as meat and milk, has caused the the demand for feedstuffs to rise in parallel. The most important product group is oil meal, a by-product derived from processing oilseeds into vegetal oils. Meanwhile, 80 million tons of oil meal are traded worldwide each year, with soybean meal accounting for 75%. The U.S., Argentina, and Brazil constitute 70% of the export supply. 40% of the imports go to the EU and the remainder to many different countries. Toepfer International offers the entire range of feedstuffs: Soybean meal, sunflower seed meal, rapeseed meal, cottonseed meal, peanut meal, linseed meal, copra meal, palm-kernel meal, tapioca, citrus pellets, sugar beet pulp, molasses, glycerine, corn gluten feed, dried distiller grains (DDG), corn germ meal, feed beans, feed peas, and lupines.
The world trade of vegetable oils lies at approx. 60 million tons. Palm oil accounts for over 55%, and for soy oil a good 20%. Roughly two thirds of the traded oils are exported by three countries (Malaysia, Indonesia, and Argentina). Next to soy oil and palm oil, Toepfer International also trades in rapeseed oil, sunflower seed oil, linseed oil, corn germ oil, palm-kernel oil, and coconut oil.
Worldwide peas production amounts to about 7 mln t annually, with almost one half of this quantity being produced in Canada. Other main producers are Australia and the EU. Worldwide trading volume reaches only roughly 3 mln t. Main exporter is again Canada with a share of nearly 2 mln t. For many years Toepfer International has been trading peas, importing them from Canada but also more and more from some other regions. .
Fertilizers were added to our product range in 1990. Our activities developed from a purely inner-Asian trade to international trade. We purchase the fertilizers in the Ukraine, in Russia as well as in the Middle East, Africa, and China. Our most important sales markets are in South and Central America, Asia, and Europe. Because of the growing demand for agricultural products and the associated necessity of increasing the agricultural production, the demand for fertilizers will also increase. We have prepared ourselves for this and will expand our activities in this market accordingly. Toepfer International trades mainly in urea, AN, AS, MAP, MOP, DAP, and NPK.
The percentage of renewable energies contributing to the total energy consumption should increase to 20% in the EU by the year 2020. Biomass will account for roughly two thirds of the total demand for renewable energy. This will induce the growth of trade with biomass, which we have included in our program.
Toepfer International trades in the following biomass products: wood pellets, palm-kernel expellers, olive pomace
