USA: Corn plantings at 93%, soybean plantings at 66% as of May 31, 2009

The USDA reports that 93% of the 2009 corn crop has been planted until May 31, 2009 which is up from the 82% of the week before and compares to last year’s pace of 94% and the five-year average of 97%. In Iowa plantings were 99 (97; 96; 99)% done, in Illinois 82 (62; 91; 98)% and in Indiana 78 (55; 86; 95)%. In total, 73 (52; 71; 86)% have emerged, thereof in Iowa 90 (78; 74, 90)%, in Illinois 52 (22; 74; 92)%, and in Indiana 52 (21; 67; 85)%. Soybean plantings stood at 66 (48; 67; 79)% with 36 (17; 30; 51)% emerged. 89 (79; 100; 98)% of the spring wheat was planted with 67 (45; 91; 90)% emerged.
Of the winter wheat, 77 (67; 73; 81)% has headed. Winter wheat condition was rated 45 (previous week 45; previous year 47)% good to excellent and 28 (27; 22)% poor to very poor. Corn condition was rated 70 (previous year 63)% good to excellent and 4 (7)% poor to very poor.
